“Youthful hue; a young, reserved and
backward bouquet, showing glimpses of its future; the palate
reveals a full-bodied muscular wine, with ample levels of cassis,
cedar and gravelly tannins; the finish is long, savoury and
complex, but time is needed to see this wine achieve its zenith.

“Moss Brothers wines have improved out
of sight in recent years and this is one of the best cabernets I
recall. Bright and varietal, with cassis and blackberry aromas it's
almost lusciously fruity in the mouth and finishes with a decisive
tannin grip. Now to 12-plus years. 92/
100.”
2008 Vintage
by Jeff Moss
Vintage 2008
was similar in many ways to that of 2007. As in 2007 rainfall was
below average at 866mm March to March although reasonable falls
occurred during July, August and September. These were
teasers only as anticipated spring and summer rains failed to
eventuate.
In late November the district experienced a
severe weather event with significant hail damage occurring
throughout the region. Moss Brothers, always lucky; suffered only
slight damage although set was adversely affected in both
Chardonnay and Merlot.
Dry conditions prevailed then right through
until the day we picked the last of the Cabernet. Notwithstanding
the lack of rain our vines remained in perfect health, vigorous
green canopies totally disease free a testimony to the care and
attention lavished on them.
Ripening patterns and hence picking dates were
almost identical to the day with 2007. Vintage 2007 had
prepared us for simultaneous ripening of reds and
whites.
Wine Makers
Notes
The grapes were picked after achieving ripe
fruit flavours and balanced acidity in the last week of March. In
the winery the grapes were crushed, de-stemmed and pumped into red
wine fermenters. Bordeaux yeast was selected to maximise the
quality of the vintage.
The young wine was matured for twelve months in
new and seasoned French oak.
Tasting
Notes
Colour: Deep red with purple
hues
Aroma: The nose is a combination of violets,
sweet ripe cherries and blackcurrant with powerful black olive and
cedary notes.
Palate: The palate is rich and dense combining
violets & blackcurrants with truffles & smoky mocha
characters from the oak - A nicely textured wine with seamless
finish. The wine may be enjoyed young for its generous fruit,
mouthfeel and balance as well as being a sound aging prospect due
to its well integrated underlying tannin
structure.
